Question:

I heard that it is not allowed to wear the clothes coming down below the ankles, is it? What do Hanafi say about it?

Answer:

At the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) to wear clothes below the ankle was considered a sign of arrogance, and arrogance - one of the greatest sins. In sharia elongation clothing associated with arrogance, as in the hadith says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

منجرثوبهخيلاءلمينظراللهاليهيومالقيامة. فقالأبوبكر: انأحدشقيثوبييسترخيالاأنأتعاهدذلكمنه  فقالرسولاللهصلياللهعليهوسلم: انكلستتصنعذلكخيلاء.

"Whoever extends clothes with arrogance, on the day of judgment Allah will not look".

Abu Bakr (radyyallahu anhu) said: "One half of my clothes longer, but I am looking for it".

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "You are not one of those who do it out of pride". (Al-Bukhari in his "Sahih", Volume 3, page 1340, Muslim in his "Sahih", Volume 3, page 1650.)

Thus, the elongation clothes to the ground itself is not haram, but it is haraam, because it brings arrogance. The fact that the extension brings to arrogance was the custom of the people during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), so the ulama were united in the opinion that arrogance is haram regardless of whether it is connected with clothing or not. The ulama differed in hukm extension clothing below the ankles and said that if it is done out of arrogance, it is haram, if not out of arrogance - makrooh.

There is nothing wrong in extending garment without arrogance, because customs have changed, and the lengthening of clothing in our time is not the custom of the arrogant. Currently, people, who dress clothing elongated (below the ankle) are not likens arrogants.
