Russia's President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Shanghai ahead of a summit at which Russia and China are hoping to deepen ties.

Putin is visiting the country for the first time since Xi became head of state last year and the trip could see a huge and long-awaited natural gas deal finally signed.

The two countries will make a "substantial" announcement and sign agreements, said Xinhua.

They will also kick off a joint military exercise involving their navies.

The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia has drawn delegations from nearly 40 countries and international organisations.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is attending, as are the leaders from Iran, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Cambodia. Russian President is expected to meet Afghani President Hamid Karzai and Irani President Hasan Rouhani at the summit.

"We plan to hold discussions on world relevant issues including the situation in Ukraine," - Presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.
