The Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin proposed laying the first stone in the construction of the Cathedral Mosque in Kazan in honor of the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bolgaria. It will be celebrated in 2022.

“We discuss the issue of building the Cathedral Mosque in Kazan. We need to decide when and where it will be situated. It seems to me that it would be right to lay the stone to our anniversary,” the press office of the President of the Republic of Tatarstan quotes Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

In 2022, the region will celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bolgaria. Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Khusnullin head of the organizing committee, RBK reports.

In mid-April, the Mufti of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kamil Samigullin, said that three locations are being considered for the construction of the Cathedral Mosque in Kazan: near the Kazan Family Center, near the “Petrushkina Dvor” area or near the “Kyrlay” park.

The idea to build a cathedral mosque in Kazan appeared in the end of 2018. The mosque is to accommodate at least 10 thousand people.
