The development of Russian Islamic education discussed at Bolgarian Academy

Bolgar, January 8, 2020

A meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Bolgarian Islamic Academy took place in the office of the educational centre on February 8, 2020.

It was attended by First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Sergey Kiriyenko, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, Head of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vitaly Naumkin, director of the Islamic Culture, Science and Education Support Fund Alexander Zhdanov, Head of Dagestan Vladimir Vasiliev, representatives of Muslim religious and scientific-educational institutions.

Sergey Kiriyenko thanked the leadership of Tatarstan for the grand work on developing the infrastructure of the Academy. “You supplied both students and teachers with all the facilities. And we have to work on the further development of the infrastructure, as the training of theologians is of great importance for the country. In this case, participation of Russian regions in which Islam is a traditional religion is very important. Initially, we wanted to give applicants from all over our country the chance to enter the Academy, who, after graduation, could return to their regions with the true knowledge, culture and traditions of Islam. We will have a good result if we cooperate”, said the First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration. He also noted that Vladimir Putin made a number of decisions to support the Bolgarian Islamic Academy, as well as increase funding for the Islamic Culture, Science and Education Support Fund.

Rector of the Bolgarian Islamic Academy Daniyar Abdrakhmanov in his report told that currently 96 undergraduates and 26 doctoral students are studying the Islamic Law at the Academy. The training is carried out by the qualified teachers and prominent Islamic scholars.

It should be noted that in 2019 the first six doctors of Muslim theology graduated from the Academy. It is supposed that annually the Academy will graduate no more than 10 doctors of sciences. This year, in addition to the doctor degrees, they expect the first graduates of the Masters of Islamic Law.
