Three elderly Muslim worshippers were stabbed outside a mosque in Australia’s Melbourne after attempting to prevent a young man, who was seemingly ‘agitated’, from entering the mosque.

One of the men, a 68-year-old Turkish national, was killed, while the other two men were injured.

Police arrived at the scene of the Turkish Islamic Cultural Centre, where they tasered and arrested the 22-year-old suspect Erol Elmas, who is also of Turkish origin.

Eye-witnesses said the three stabbed men were just trying to ‘break things up’ following an argument which involved the assailant.

It is believed as many as 40 worshippers were in the mosque at the time of the incident.
