France sees rise in Islamophobia

Attacks on Muslims in France, including women wearing headscarves, increased by 11.3 percent in 2013, compared to the previous year, according to the National Observatory of Islamophobia.

Two hundred and twenty six Muslims were attacked in 2013, according to France's police and military records, of which 164 reported cases were threats against Muslims and 62 were actions against Muslims.

Last week, the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyan instunned the world by announcing that the city was banning the construction of new mosques. The ban was one of the latest and clearest signs of the growing anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiments in Russia.

There are an estimated 2 million Muslim residents in the city, but none of Moscow’s four existing mosques can hold more than 10,000 people. Worshippers frequently have to use the streets or wait for hours to enter the existing mosques, especially on Fridays and religious occasions.


Edmonton police set to unveil official hijab

The Edmonton Police Service is to reveal a prototype official hijab for its officers this week, following testing to ensure its safety.

It is understood the Muslim headscarf would be black, and designed to be worn underneath the standard police cap.


Anti-veil 'beauty' campaign raises tensions in East Turkistan

Chinese authorities have launched the "Project Beauty" campaign, which aims to discourage women from covering their faces — a religious practice of some Muslim Uighurs women in the East Turkistan (Xinjiang) province.

A Xinjiang government web portal promoting Project Beauty did not mention banning veils directly, but listed its goals in promoting local beauty products and other goods, as well as encouraging women to be "practitioners of modern culture".


UK Muslim women suffer Islamophobic attacks: Study

Muslim women are more likely to be targeted by Islamophobic attacks than men in Britain, a new study has found.

According to the report, entitled "Maybe We Are Hated," about 58 percent of those experiencing Islamophobia in the UK between April 2012 and April 2013 were female.


OIC head of cultural affairs speaks on Islamophobia

An international law, represented by Article 20 of International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), clearly states that denigration of symbols or persons sacred to any religion is a criminal offense, according to Rizwan Saeed Shaikh, head of department of cultural affairs at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Shaikh was addressing the members of Pakistan Executive Group (PEG) as a guest speaker at Marhaba restaurant recently.


Quitting Femen, Tunisia’s Amina accuses protest group of Islamophobia

Amina Sboui, a Tunisian activist who was detained for nearly three months, said on Tuesday she had left the radical women’s protest group Femen, accusing it of Islamophobia.

“I do not want my name to be associated with an Islamophobic organization,” she told the Maghreb edition of the Huffington Post.


30,000 US citizens embrace Islam every year: Scholar

Marriam Ahmed, a US scholar, Wednesday claimed that an estimated 30,000 Americans embraced Islam every year in spite of negative propaganda against Muslims and their religion. Marriam Ahmed, Assistant Director Programmes and Operations in the Berkeley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University, United States, was addressing as a guest speaker of a lecture titled “Islam and America Today: From 9/11 to Boston Bombings” here at International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), Female Campus.


One-day Hijab Leads Young Briton to Islam

French See Islam ‘Incompatible’

A new survey has found that French are growing concerned with immigrants, politicians, globalization and media, with 74 percent believe Islam is not compatible with French society, The Inquisitr reported.

“The French, or at least the vast majority of them, seem to be afraid of everything,” French historian Michel Wincock told Le Monde this week.
