Remembering Allah while Laying and Sitting

When one ceases to have an awareness of Allah, His qareen will tempt him, urging him to be even more heedless of Allah Ta’alaa.

With the name of Allah. The Beneficent, The Merciful

As We were reading the Al-Adhkaar of Imam An-Nawawi (rahimahullah) we came across the following hadith:

Abu Hurayrah (radhiya Allahu ‘Anhu) said that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “If anyone lies on his side while not remembering Allah the exalted, deprivation (tirah) will descend upon him on the day of Judgement ; and whoever sits in a place without remembering Allah, the glorious and magnificent, , deprivation with descend upon him on the day of judgment.”

This hadith is reported by Abu Dawud in his chapter of Adab, book of What one does when sleeping within his Sunan and by Imam An-Nasaa’i without the addition of “sitting”. Imam An-Nawawi states, “The chain is jayyid (good).” The editor Subay’ Hamzi Haakimi grades the narration “Hasan” (a good chain). ((Report number 251 of the Adhkaar )) In the chain is Muhammad ibn ‘Ajlaan of whom there is disagreement regarding. The discussion pertaining to him, however, is of no concern as the Huffaath have graded this hadith hasan and have accepted his narrations.

Imam An-Nawawi states after the hadith, “and the word tirah ‏تِرَةًmeans naqs (loss, decrease) and it is said, tabi’ah(consequence etc.).” Imam Al-Munaawi (rahimahullah) said it means, “Naqs and حَسْرَة(Hasrah – grief, sorrow, pain, distress, affliction). ((Refer to ‘Awn Al-Ma’bud within the commentary upon this hadith ))

Just as Imam Abu Dawud, Imam An-Nawawi includes this hadith within his chapter, “The Hatedness (karaahah) of Sleep Without Remembering Allah the Exalted”. The point here is that when one is “laying for sleep” he is to remember his Allah ta’alaa. The word for “Remember” is dhikr which can also allude to mentioning, either by one’s innermost or one’s tongue. The gist of the hadith is that there will be severe punishment for the heart that is heedless of mentioning Allah ta’alaa while sitting or lying down. Why? If one does not thank Allah, becoming neglectful of Allah’s mercy upon them for giving them the simply ability to sit or lay down, the heart becomes engulfed in idleness, forgetful of The Real. Our lives are for Allah and his remembrance, not for the mundane.

Allah says:

وَمَنيَعْشُعَنذِكْرِالرَّحْمَنِنُقَيِّضْلَهُشَيْطَاناًفَهُوَلَهُقَرِينٌ

“If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him.” ((43:36 ))

When one ceases to have an awareness of Allah, His qareen will tempt him, urging him to be even more heedless of Allah ta’alaa.
