Muslims living in New York City may see their demand of recognition for Islamic holidays in public schools fulfilled under new Mayor Bill de Blasio, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

“It is complicated in terms of logistics and school calendar and budget. But it’s something I want to get done in a reasonable time frame,” Blasio said on Monday in an interview on the Brian Lehrer Show.

During the show, the mayor said that he intended to close schools for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha holidays as well as for the Lunar New Year.

Blasio said he was not yet sure whether Diwali, the festival of lights is celebrated in the Hindu, Jain, and Sikh communities should be officially recognized as a day off for public schools.
