Saudi Arabia to increase the quota for Hajj for Russian Muslims

Moscow, August 26, 2019

Saudi Arabia may increase the quota for Hajj for Russian pilgrims by 500 places - up to 26 thousand people a year. It is due to the increase of number of Muslims in the country, says the Ministry of Hajj Affairs of Saudi Arabia.

For comparison, in 2014 the quota was 16.4 thousand people. In 2015, Russia asked to increase the quota by 600 people in connection with the joining of Crimea.

In the summer of 2019, the State Duma adopted a law regulating the special legal status of pilgrims and pilgrimages.

Hajj is a pilgrimage to the holy places in Mecca and Medina, which must be performed by every Muslim at least once in a lifetime.

According to the Saudi authorities, more than 2.4 million pilgrims performed Hajj in 2019.
