Russian Senators adopted the law of protecting the sanctity of religious feelings of believers, that provides criminal responsibility for their offense, Ria Novosti news agency reports.

In the case of public humiliation rituals of religious organizations, "believers, are an integral part of the historical heritage of the peoples of Russia", and publicly insulting the religious feelings of citizens provides penalties of up to 500 thousand rubles, or compulsory works up to 200 hours or imprisonment for up to 3 years.

Desecration, destruction or damage to objects of religious worship would be punishable by a fine from 100 thousand to 500 thousand rubles, or by compulsory works up to 400 hours or by imprisonment for up to 5 years.

In addition, the Criminal Code of Russian Federation proposed amendments to allow levy fines in the amount from 10 thousand to 30 thousand from the citizens and up 50 thousand to 100 thousand rubles from public entities for "obstructing of the right to freedom conscience and freedom of religion."

If the president of Russia Vladimir Putin will sign the bill, it will come into force on July 1, 2013.
