Rosstat: low rate of divorces in Russian Muslim republics

Moscow, August 26, 2020

Three Muslim republics take the leading positions among the Russian regions with the least number of divorces, Pavel Smelov, deputy head of Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), told the agencies.

“A consistently low divorce rate is recorded in the North Caucasus. Ingushetia and Chechnya take the first and the second places, where the divorce rate is only 0.6%”, he said. The third place goes to Dagestan, where the rate is just over 1%. The deputy head of Rosstat, Pavel Smelov, stressed that the divorce rate in these regions is traditionally low due to the local traditions. In Muslim families, divorce is considered as an extreme measure.

The leading place in the ranking with the highest number of divorces - 4.3%, goes to the Republic of Altai.
