Crimean Tatars were voting more actively in the referendum on the status of Crimea in Crimean cities than in areas where they live in compact communities, Albir Krganov, Mufti of Moscow, Central District, and Chuvashia, who is a member of the Russian Public Chamber, said.

"It is difficult to say how active Crimean Tatars were in this referendum. They were more active in cities where Tatars don't live in compact communities. The situation appeared to be more difficult in areas where they live in compact communities, where certain pressure is exerted on people by forces that are not interested in the referendum," Krganov, who is currently in Bakhchisarai, said in a phone conversation with Interfax on Sunday.

Krganov said Crimean Tatars were under ideological and information pressure.

"Some forces are interested in Crimean Tatars being unhappy. Ideological pressure was exerted, when people were told that they will not be Muslims if they vote in the referendum. Obviously, those who organize such pressure are concerned about securing their interests, including mercantile interests," he said.

"Relatives can also be used for putting pressure on people. However, this pressure was different, when relatives advise not to come to the referendum," Krganov said.

In any case, Crimean Tatars were voting in the Crimean referendum, he said.
