Conference “Islam in Bunin's work” held in Ingushetia

The National Library of Ingushetia hosted a reading conference “Islam in the work of Ivan Alekseevich Bunin”, timed to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the classic of Russian literature, the press office of the institution reported.

Scientists-philologists, teachers of literature, members of the “Union of Women of Russia”, teachers of the basis of religion, students of the philological faculty of Ingushetia State University, as well as college students took part in the reading conference.

The conference was opened by the organizer of the meeting, the head of the Reader Service Department, Elizaveta Shadieva. She, in particular noted that Bunin wrote over two dozen poems dedicated to Islam, in which the author revealed deep interest and depth of immersion in Islamic topics.

Ivan Alekseevich Bunin is the author of the first and only in the history of Russian poetry collection “Islam”, which he ventured to publish only in 1905 after the adoption of the law on religious tolerance in the Russian Empire. These poems were created by Bunin under the impression of a rich experience of communication and living in a Muslim environment during long travels across the countries of the East and Africa, studying the meanings of the suras and ayats of the Koran that touched his soul.

In conclusion, the deputy director of the library, Lidia Malsagova, thanked all the participants of the event and expressed hope that this reader's conference will serve not only as an incentive to study Bunin's work, but to a deeper knowledge of the Word of God - the Koran as well.
