Athletes in Russia provided freedom on performing religious rites during sport events

A bill has been sent to the State Duma providing for the possibility of performing religious rites and ceremonies in sports facilities at the request of participants of sport events.

A group of deputies from different factions introduced draft amendments to the laws “On Physical Culture and Sport in the Russian Federation” and “On Freedom of Conscience and on Religious Organizations”, which provide for the man the right to freedom of religious needs during sport events.

Among the developers of the bill are deputies of “United Russia” Ildar Gilmutdinov, Rima Batalova, as well as Sergei Gavrilov, head of the committee on the development of civil society, issues of public and religious organizations.

The explanatory note to the draft law states that article 20 of the federal law “On Physical Culture and Sport in the Russian Federation” introduces amendments that propose to establish “the right of the organizers of sport events to provide participants of such events with the opportunity to perform religious rites and ceremonies conducted by religious organizations in accordance with legislation on freedom of conscience, religious freedom and religious organizations”.

The article 16 of the Law “On Freedom of Conscience and on Religious Organizations” was proposed to be supplemented with a paragraph providing that religious rites and ceremonies may be held in specially designated sports facilities at the request of participants of sport events.

The initiators of the bill believe that it will provide participants of all sport events with equal conditions in accordance with international principles.
