Iran and Iraq drive 15% global rise in executions

The number of known executions around the world rose almost 15 percent in 2013, with the spike due in part to more executions in Iran and Iraq, a new Amnesty International report says.

The report released by the London-based rights group on Wednesday comes on the heels of a decision this week by an Egyptian court to sentence to death 529 alleged supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood. The group has called the action “grotesque”.

 

Survey: US is greatest threat to world peace

The US is the greatest threat to world peace, according to a global poll from WIN and Gallup International conducted in 65 countries.

According to the survey, 24% of respondents see the US as the greatest threat, and in a considerable distance behind it, 8% believe Pakistan is the great threat to world peace.

 

Poll: 69 percent see Russia as threat to US

Sixty-nine percent of people see Russia as a threat to the United States — the highest level recorded since the breakup of the Soviet Union, according to a new poll.

A CNN-ORC poll released Friday found another 31 percent say they do not see Russia as a threat. That number stood at 53 percent two years ago.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Guterres says the “unconscionable” turmoil plaguing Syria has forced over nine million people from their homes.

“It is unconscionable that a humanitarian catastrophe of this scale is unfolding before our eyes with no meaningful progress to stop the bloodshed,” said the UN refugee chief in a statement on Friday.

 

Belief In God Essential To A Moral Life: Survey

A new Pew Research survey of global attitudes on religion finds that a great number of people around the world think a belief in God is vital to leading a moral life.

The survey of people in 40 countries found that majorities in 22 countries believed that having God in one’s life was essential to being a moral person. Majorities in all five African countries surveyed, as well as every Middle Eastern country except Israel, believed God is vital to a person’s morality.

This is the fourth time in the past five years that Russia’s capital stays ahead of New York on top of our list of billionaire haunts – those cities that are the primary homes to the most billionaires. Eighty-four of the world’s richest, worth a total of over $366 billion, call Russia’s most populous city home. New York City continues to rank second, with 62 billionaires worth $280 billion. More Americans say Afghanistan war was a mistake

Almost half of the US population believes that the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan was a mistake, a new Gallup poll shows.

The poll found that 49 percent of Americans think the invasion should not have happened while 48 percent believe the opposite.

 

57% of road accident victims are teachers and students: Study

Around 57 percent of road accident fatalities involve teachers and students, according to a latest study.

Conducted by a local daily, the study said male and female teachers accounted for 35 percent of these fatalities and students 22 percent.

 

No Israelis killed in Israel by Palestinians in 2013

A report has revealed that not a single Israeli citizen was killed by Palestinians inside Israel throughout the entire year of 2013.

According to the Strategy Page, only six Israelis were killed by Palestinian resistence fighters in 2013, and all of those incidents happened outside of Israel.

 

73% of citizens have no houses of their own

Seventy-three percent of citizens do not have houses of their own, a Shoura Council member said on Wednesday.

Saudis have called on the Real Estate Development Fund (REDF) to speed up the disbursement of loans in order to help them build homes before it becomes more expensive.
