Dubai shoots up rankings for world's most expensive rentals

Dubai is home to some of the world’s most expensive high-end apartment rentals, according to a new housing index, with average prices increasing by about 30 percent in the last year alone.

Relocation specialist ECA International’s latest Accommodation report ranked the glitzy emirate as the planet’s 16th priciest rental market for expats, up from 35th place just 12 months ago.


UAE: Dubai to launch Halal Index

Dubai Exports is looking to issue an online Halal Index to list all UAE-based firms that are halal, Saeed Al Awadi, CEO of Dubai Exports, told Gulf News.

The index will be set up by Dubai Exports, an agency of the Department of Economic Development (DED), and will include relevant information about all the halal companies, banks, financial institutions, Islamic products and Islamic services in Dubai.


World’s tallest hotel opens second tower in Dubai

The second tower at JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, the world’s tallest hotel, is now open, with 294 new rooms bringing the total room count in the hotel to 1098.

The hotel, which opened 804 rooms in Tower 1 in November 2012, will offer 1608 rooms across the two towers when complete.


First smart mosque opens in Dubai

The United Arab Emirates opened its first smart mosque in Dubai on Sunday. The Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities (DIACA) launched the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Mosque in Jumeirah 3, using the Quick response (QR) code technology which offers digital access to mosques. The mosque is now equipped with the QR code technology for the first time in government buildings and is part of Phase-I of developing smart mosques that also includes nine other mosques which will follow suit later this year, according to a report in Khaleej Times.


UAE residents welcome plans to grant Indian visas on arrival to 180 countries

Travellers will no longer have to queue at local consulates after New Delhi announced the proposed overhaul of its strict visa regime.


UAE considers importing North American gas

The United Arab Emirates, a Gulf OPEC oil producer, said it was looking at the possibility of importing natural gas from North America, in what would be one of the most striking developments since the start of the U.S. shale boom.

The United States and Canada are producing record amounts of gas from shale rock formations, pulling down North American prices to levels that have attracted the interest of foreign buyers.


Abu Dhabi plans aviation biofuel project with Boeing and Total

Abu Dhabi's state-owned carrier Etihad Airways is joining with French energy firm Total and U.S. aircraft maker Boeing to develop biofuels in the emirate, company officials announced on Sunday.

With its huge oil reserves, Abu Dhabi has ample access to cheap jet fuel, but it has said it wants to develop sustainable energy sources to diversify its economy. Biofuels could also help Etihad meet targets in the aviation industry for curbing emissions of greenhouse gases.


Dubai’s Arabtec wins $1bn hospital contract

Dubai-based builder Arabtec has been awarded a contract worth nearly $1 billion to build a hospital in Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates with its joint venture partners, the company said on Saturday.

The New Al Ain Hospital will be built by 2018 under a 3.3bn dirhams ($900 million) contract awarded by state agency Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada), Arabtec said.
