Ramadan: No food cost increase in UAE

Government officials will be monitoring the price of groceries in supermarkets during Ramadan to deter any unauthorised price hikes

Suppliers and retailers cannot increase prices of essential consumer commodities during the holy month without written consent by the authorities, said Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, the Minister of Economy.


High-tech podcars to take to Dubai streets

Dubai is set to have a new mode of public transport — high-tech podcars — in the next couple of years, a senior official announced at a conference on Monday.

The Zabeel area has been identified for the launch of the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system, which is currently operational only at London’s Heathrow Airport and in West Virginia in the US. In 2011 a similar system was also piloted at Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.

Dubai's iconic Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, could be stripped of its Guinness title if Saudi Arabia succeeds in its plans to construct the even larger Kingdom Tower in Jeddah -- a prospect looking more likely as work begins next week, according to Construction Weekly.


Dubai cost of living rising at highest rate since 2009

Rising housing and food prices have pushed Dubai’s inflation rate to the highest since 2009, with the cost of living in March up 3 percent on the year before.

Housing and utility costs, which account for almost 44 percent of consumer expenses, were up 4.8 percent, and rose 0.4 percent month-on-month in March, Reuters said, quoting data from the Dubai Statistics Center.


Study ranks UAE number one in social progress

The study was published by the nonprofit Social Progress Imperative and released last week at the Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship. 

The UAE has been ranked number one in the region in a global study measuring social progress in 132 countries. Globally, the country has been ranked 37th in the 2014 Social Progress Index.


500 born with heart disease every year in UAE

Before the era of paediatric cardiac surgery, the chances of survival past the age of 18 for a newborn with congenital heart disease was below 20 percent.

More than 500 babies are born with congenital heart disease in the UAE every year, with nearly 70 per cent of them requiring cardiac surgery, and more than half of those within the first six months of life, according to statistics released by Shaikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC).
