Jerusalem is the capital of Islamic tourism for 2016

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has chosen Jerusalem as the capital of Islamic tourism for 2016, Palestinian officials said Thursday.

Mahmoud Habbash, PA minister of religious affairs, said the decision is a step towards breaking Israel's siege of the city's Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The grand mosques in Mecca and Medina, the two holiest in Islam, draw millions of pilgrims annually. Al-Aqsa, the last of the three sacred sites the Prophet Mohammad urged Muslims to visit, sees only a few thousand foreign worshippers a year.

Visiting Jerusalem is up for debate now, and it's good that it is being taken up and understood now. The question is not whether to visit Jerusalem or not, rather it is visiting it under Israeli's occupation. Islamic scholars have different opinions on this, all of which are respected.
