20% of high school students have tried drugs

Around one fifth of Kuwait’s high school students tried drugs, a study has indicated.

According to the survey of 11,380 public and private school students conducted by the Public Authority for Youth and Sport in Kuwait, 19.6 per cent said that they took drugs for pleasure or due to peer pressure.

HIV ‘cured’ in baby for first time, could impact Mideast

Researchers say they have, for the first time, cured a baby born with HIV - a development that could help improve the treatment of babies infected at birth.

The findings were presented Sunday at the 20th annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Atlanta, the U.S.

The health of the mother largely determines the fate of her child, in fact an overwhelming majority- over 90 percent- of HIV infections in infants are passed on by mothers during pregnancy, labor, delivery or breastfeeding.

The first scientific study to look at the role of cigarette smoke in the development of Alzheimer’s disease finds it may trigger or worsen the condition in older people who are at risk for this most common form of senile dementia. 

Alzheimer’s disease is usually a condition of old age.  Experts say people who live long enough - generally into their 70s, 80s and 90s - are at significantly increased risk of developing the neurodegenerative disease, which not only robs people of their memories but also of their mobility. Alzheimer's is incurable and leads eventually to death.

 

Obesity leads to 20,000 deaths in KSA each year

At least 20,000 people in Saudi Arabia die every year due to complications from obesity, said endocrinologist Dr. Waleed Albakr.

Albakr, who works at Dammam University, and is promoting an awareness campaign to educate Saudis on the dangers of diabetes. The campaign, “Lose your weight and gain your health,” notes diabetes is often caused by obesity.
