Michigan Uni. Gets First Muslim Chaplain

ANN ARBOR, Michigan – Filling in the missing role for Islamic guidance on campus, a Muslim chaplain has been named to help accommodate the religious needs of students at the University of Michigan.

Sarah Prucha and Christy Thephachanh were both spiritual seekers when the people around them who most lived their faith were Muslims.

Prucha was 25 and working at a downtown Houston bank when she noticed co-workers pausing five times each day to pray. Even things as small as saying Bismillah (In the name of God) before eating or saying Alhamdulillah, (All praise is due to God) after sneezing caught her attention.

 

Americans must give their Muslim brethren a break

Muslim Americans deserve a break. There are as many as 6-8 million Muslims living in the United States, where they have been contributing to the country as doctors, engineers, artists, actors and professionals.

Around Sept. 11, 2001, not long after she founded the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta, Soumaya Khalifa heard from a group whose name sounded like “Bakers Club.” It wanted a presentation.

The address was unfamiliar, but she went anyway. The group turned out to be the Bickerers Club, whose members love to argue. Islam was their topic du jour and their venue was a tavern. Ms. Khalifa laughed, and made the best of it.
